New pedestrian friendly area to be created in the town centre

Date published: 26 September 2007

Rochdale's main high street is set to undergo a half a million pound revamp. Works have already begun on Yorkshire Street to transform the street into a contemporary area for people to shop and relax. Improvements will include natural York stone and granite paving and stylish street furniture.

Councillor Mohammad Sharif, Cabinet Member for Regeneration chipped in with the works to lay the first stone flags: ''I am so pleased to see these works taking place on Yorkshire Street. These improvements will act as a catalyst to regenerate the rest of the town centre and will set and raise the standard for all future designs and developments''.

Head of Regeneration at Rochdale Borough Council Penny Sharp said: ''We are keen to deliver further resurfacing and landscaping improvements along the area of Yorkshire Street between Reed Hill and Cheetham Street''.

Applications for funding to Central Government and the European Regional Development Fund have been submitted with a decision expected in early October.

It is expected the first phase of the improvements, between Baillie Street and Reed Hill will be completed by the end of November.
