New community centre will 'push through hard times'

A brand new community centre for the elderly is being built in Wardleworth.

The state-of-the-art facility, which will replace the former Kashmir Youth Project building, will be under construction until April this year, and will provide a range of services for older people.

The project will operate on a not-for-profit basis and will be run by Rochdale Development Agency, Rochdale Council and the Kashmir Youth Project.

Councillor Mohammed Sharif said: “Wardleworth is undergoing comprehensive regeneration.

"Unity House, along with the health centre currently being built in Belfield Road and the Housing Market Renewal activities nearby will contribute to improving the quality of life for local people."

Councillor Keith Swift commented: “As we see the start of 2009 it is good to see Rochdale aiming high with regeneration.

“The Liberal Democrats are doing well with pushing ahead, despite the current economic downturn.

“This project demonstrates an eagerness to push through hard times".

In view of the extreme deprivation described in national (and local) media coverage, would it not be more appropriate to fund a community project/centre to address the issues in Lower Falinge?
