'Sea of turbines will damage landscape', windfarm inquiry told

Date published: 17 February 2009

The inquiry into the proposed windfarms at Crook Hill has been told by a council representative that the proposed development will leak up with existing turbines in Burnley and on Scout Moor to create a 'sea of turbines, damaging the fragile landscape'.

The comments were made by Philip Kolvin, who is represting Rochdale, Rossendale and Calderdale councils, at the inquiry into whether or not the windfarms should get the go ahead.

Coronation Power, who is behind the proposals, say the turbines are capable of generating 80 megawatts of electricty per year and were vital for helping the region reach the Government's conservation targets. But the three councils say the turbines would ruin the unique Pennine landscape.

The ongoing inquiry is expected to last six weeks, with around 50 witnesses speaking at the hearing at Rochdale Rugby Club in Bamford.

How do you damage a landscape?

They can be dismantled - not completely temporary structures, but not permanent either. Since the landscape was originally Birch forest, isn't it irreparably damaged already?
