Yorkshire Street leads the way
Date published: 09 October 2007
The town’s main high street, Yorkshire Street, is currently undergoing a half a million pound transformation that will regenerate the tired and dated street into a chic and contemporary setting that is more appealing to users and pedestrian friendly. Improvements include ground resurfacing with natural York stone and granite paving and nstallation of new stylish street furniture and street lighting.
Councillor Mohammad Sharif, the Portfolio Holder for Regeneration is supporting the scheme and has even chipped in with the works to lay the stone flags. "I am so pleased to see these works taking place on Yorkshire Street. The town centre has not benefited from any significant investment for many years now but that is all about to change. These works on Yorkshire Street will act as a catalyst to regenerate the rest of the town centre and will set and raise the standard for all future designs and developments."
The first phase of works on Yorkshire Street sees the resurfacing of the stretch between Baillie Street and Reed Hill. Other improvements include new wall mounted street lighting to create a safer night-time environment, installation of new street furniture and decorative feature lighting including LED lights along The Bank passageway (by McDonalds). It is expected the works will be completed by the end of November.
Funding to deliver the Yorkshire Street improvements has been awarded from the European Regional Development Fund and Central Governments Safer, Stronger Communities Fund.
