Police give out crook locks in blitz on car crime
Date published: 10 March 2009
Rochdale North Neighbourhood Policing Team gave out around 100 crook locks today (Tuesday 10 March) to members of the public who have been victims of vehicle crime.
The locks will be given out to residents with older models of cars that are vulnerable to theft.
Jackie Bell, Crime Reduction Advisor, said: “With advanced technology it is much harder for opportunist thieves to break into newer cars. Our analysis shows that thieves are targeting older models of cars with fewer security features such as central locking and an immobiliser. We are encouraging members of the public to consider securing their vehicles with crook locks.”
Police have issued the following advice to car owners:
Think about where you park, thieves prefer dimly-lit places with few passers-by. Choose a brightly-lit street or properly managed car park.
If you have a garage, use it.
Always close windows and lock the doors.
Remove any valuables from your vehicle
If fitted with a removable radio or front panel, always remove and take with you
Use a visual deterrent on your steering wheel.
Etch windows with your registration number.
If possible have an engine immobiliser and car alarm fitted, with a visible warning light.
