Bus package finalised for Loop Line closure
Date published: 09 July 2009
Transport bosses have finalised a package of bus services to cater for passengers while the Oldham Loop Line is converted to Metrolink.
Following talks between GMPTE and First Manchester, the operator has made some enhancements to its services to support passengers who will be affected when the Loop Line closes for conversion to Metrolink from Saturday 3 October.
The changes will come into force on Monday 31 August to give passengers a month to prepare.
Michael Renshaw, GMPTE's Interim Bus and Rail Director, said: "A lot of work has gone into developing these services, which we believe offer reasonable alternatives for passengers during the two-and-a-half year conversion of the Loop Line.
"Two detailed surveys - looking at not only how many people we need to cater for and when, but also the kinds of journeys - have fed into the process and the new services will be launched a month before the closure to give people time to adjust.
"We will be conducting a major information campaign over the summer to make sure that people are completely up to speed with the alternatives that will be on offer."
Andy Scholey, Managing Director of First in Manchester, said: "We have worked with GMPTE to enhance our bus services to provide a suitable alternative for the existing rail passengers.
"In addition to our existing services, which provide up to 18 buses an hour between Oldham and Manchester, we are doubling the number of buses that will link Milnrow, Newhey and Shaw with Manchester, including a faster service at peak periods that will also serve Buckstones.
"A new link is also being provided to Rochdale railway station from Shaw, Newhey and Milnrow. Normal bus fares will apply on all the services, including our value for money FirstDay, FirstWeek and FirstMonth tickets."

Have Your Say

Not sure if this package will go down well with Newhey and Milnrow people needing to use Rochdale station for trains to work. They will have to pay for journey by bus and then by train instead of their season ticket for trains at present. Will the bus actually stop at the station entrance? What happens when the construction work begins at the station? Have local users been ‘consulted’?
