Fire fighters are tackling a huge fire at Gordon Rigg Garden Centre.

The garden centre on the junction of Moss Bridge Road and Kingsway was spotted ablaze by local residents at around 8.00pm (Saturday 10 October).

The fire has been confined to the end of the building, which is believed to be the pet department.

Kingsway has been closed off by police officers, however, they expect the closure won't last long.

John Higgins, from Turf Hill described the fire as ‘huge’ he said: "I have been out here for about 45 minutes and the fire is nothing compared to how it was earlier, when I arrived it was well ablaze.

“My son works at the garden centre so he has given the fire service a key to get in.

“I think the first person to spot it was a taxi driver going past, he obviously notified somebody then we heard about it too.”

Fire engines from Rochdale and Chadderton attended the scene.

Comments

It's a shame no one could mention all the animal that perished in the fire.

I am glad nobody was injured. It is sad that animals died, but it would have been far worse if any people had died or were burned.
