Helping police tackle anti-social behaviour

Date published: 05/11/2009

Residents came out in numbers on Friday (30 October) to see how police tackle anti-social behaviour.

Sixty-two residents joined 55 police officers, PCSOs and Special Constables from the five Neighbourhood Policing Teams in Rochdale as they stepped up patrols as part of Treacle, a partnership initiative between GMP, Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service, Health and Safety Executive, Rochdale Council, GMPTE and partners.

Treacle highlights the dangers and possible consequences of anti-social behaviour, including the misuse of fireworks, around Halloween and bonfire night.

Inspector Michelle Hughes for Rochdale South Neighbourhood Policing Team said: “It was really great to see so many members of our community take part and work with us to tackle anti-social behaviour. It is vital that we continue to work hand in hand with residents and the local authorities to ensure our Borough continues to be a safe place to live and work.

“We have had some fantastic feedback from the public. For example, in Rochdale South one person said: “It was interesting to see how things are dealt with on the other side and especially how many officers it needs to deal with incidents that only start with something as simple as litter dropping and end with drink driving.”

Action led to 13 people being stopped and searched, there were 23 seizures of alcohol, 152 people were stopped and accounted for and eight people were arrested

The day also attracted the support of 16 partner agency representatives, including housing associations, trading standards and youth services, who joined police and community members on patrol.

Chief Superintendent John O’Hare for Rochdale Division added: “It’s great to see the work we do with our partners, residents and community make a difference and have a positive impact for everyone. I am very grateful to everyone that took part in the event and would just like to say thank you.

“I am sure that the efforts they have all made will carry on this week, especially with Bonfires that may be taking place. Can I take this opportunity to personally encourage and welcome the continued support of our residents and community.”
