Fireworks and fun pack the Town Centre

Date published: 05/11/2009

The Town Centre was packed tonight as thousands of people turned out to see the fireworks display return. South Parade, which was closed to traffic, and The Butts became the focal area and the best vantage point for the fireworks.

There was also street theatre, light displays and circus acts, performed by local charity Skylight Circus Arts, including a sensational trapeze act that drew gasps from the crowd and a raucous round of applause at the finish.

A family-friendly funfair aimed at young children included a Mystery Mansion Funhouse, Hook-a-Duck, Teacups, and lots of food and drink stalls.

Mirella Natale who brought her daughter, Charlotte, and her friend Chloe said: "The children have loved the funfair, it has been so nice to see them squealing with delight."

Councillor Jim Gartside commenting on the fireworks display said: "I was viewing from the front of the Town Hall and it looked like two fireworks displays because of the reflection in the Black Box. What a really good display it was too."

Credit must be given to Debbie O'Brien and Suzy Woods of Rochdale Town Centre Management for successfully putting together another fantastic Town Centre event.

Speaking to Rochdale Online, Ms O'Brien said: "Tonight's fireworks display was fabulous with such a fantastic turnout of local people supporting the town. It really proved to us how well received the event was by Rochdale people with a great round of applause as the last firework lit up the sky.

"This was the first event of a series of activities throughout the Christmas period with the next one, Christmas Lights Switch On, taking place on Thursday 19 November. We hope to see you there!"
