Christmas lights set for star switch on
Date published: 06/11/2009
There are seven weeks to go, but Rochdale is already preparing for the big seasonal celebrations.
A surprise star guest will throw the switch on the Christmas lights during a big event in the town centre on Thursday 19 November.
Rochdale hit the headlines this summer after putting up their Christmas lights in August, but now, three months later, they’re being switched on.
The event, which starts at 6.00pm on The Butts, to be hosted by Ditchy and Salty from the Real Radio Breakfast Show, will signal the start of six weeks of entertainment in town during the run up to Christmas Eve.
Street entertainment, star guest appearances, a children’s funfair and live festive music are all being lined up.
The reindeer parade is back by popular demand on Sunday 6 December and a Christmas market will also be staged over the weekend of 18-20 December.
Councillor Andrew Abbott, Chairman of Rochdale Township said: “The atmosphere in the town centre at this time of year is always special, and we are sure that everyone will find something to enjoy in this years programme.”
Further details of the Christmas lights switch on will be announced next week. Among the highlights are a Queens of Winter Wonderland parade starting at 6pm from Yorkshire Street onto the Butts and an appearance by popular children’s TV character, Fizz from ‘The Tweenies’.
