Rochdale town centre 'make over'

Date published: 03/02/2010

The street furniture in Rochdale town centre is getting a 'make over' - benches, litter bins and bollards are being spruced up.

Currently town centre street furniture is a variety of colours but the new scheme will see all town centre street furniture painted black and gold.

The bad weather has hampered the work but it is understood that the Council street services team will complete the job by the end of February.

Councillor Greg Couzens, Rochdale Town Centre Management Chairman and a town centre business owner, said: "It's vital that the town centre is a welcoming place for shoppers and a pleasant environment for businesses to operate in, at the moment we have an array of colours and I believe that our town centre will be greatly improved by coordinating a more classical look of black and gold."

Would that be £50K's worth of paint Mr Couzens?
"Not enough to renovate a single shop", fifty thousand pounds or last desperate bid to salvage some street cred, fifty thousand pounds worth of paint?

Could anyone tell me why the lower part of Yorkshire Street is in such a state of disrepair? I feel this is more important than street furniture. It is a much used area mostly by people going to the Halifax and the walk. I find it hazardous with the lumpy surfaces and uneven pavements.

I'm not sure the first thing visitors look at is the bollards and bins. How about free parking after say noon that might bring more people to Rochdale?

This just about sums up Lib Dem policy in Rochdale, paint over the cracks but do not actually solve any problems. Perhaps this painting is being paid for out of my massive council tax rise!

Cllr Couzens, you are spending 50K on painting street furniture. Have you fell for that old prophecy: "People judge a book by its cover?"
You will have to do something more positive than painting in black and gold.
It has been already suggested to allow free parking from noon, instead of 3pm. I have an even better suggestion, offer drivers (who reside in Rochdale) parking for £1 for twelve months parking 3 hours a day.
Rochdale town gains and the Council receive monies also.

Why not just paint it black?
In mourning for a town suffering terminal economic blight, perhaps a few wreaths at the top of Drake Street and get the town centre "regeneration' zone declared an economic graveyard. We can have the £150K phantom employee as RMBC's new corporate logo?

My parents shop a lot in Dewsbury and the car park near the market there has a deal with certain stall holders where they stamp a card and when it's full you get a days free parking.
This helps the market stay alive and helps visitors.
With a dying market like ours it could also be an option.

Isn't this colour scheme the colour scheme of Manchester?

We need action to fix things and incentivise proper shops to open, even if just on a temporary basis, whilst the new town centre plan is agreed.
Mr Couzens comments in the media recently have shocked me and have been embarrassing for the town.
