Counting the cost of the icy blast

The high street has suffered its worst January in 15 years due to a combination of the recession and icy weather.

The British Retail Consortium said the dreadful start to 2010 followed the strongest December for eight years and dampened hopes for a strong retail recovery.

Severe weather conditions kept shoppers at home while the impact of a higher VAT rate and economic uncertainty saw shoppers focus on essentials.

In Rochdale, it is believed that footfall has decreased in what is traditionally a quiet time for traders.

Townships and Corporate Management Portfolio holder, Councillor Liz Thirsk said: “Of course I have noticed that Rochdale has been very quiet, but it isn’t the only place.

“Rochdale hasn’t been singled out when it comes to slow trade as the bad weather has caused problems for many other town centres across the North West.

“The council is doing absolutely everything it can to help traders. But weather is something we can’t control; I’m sure the people of Rochdale wouldn’t be pleased with us if we investing in tractors in case we have bad weather every other year.”

The traders who have had the most success during the wintry weather were those selling wellingtons, thermal underwear and hot water bottles.
