Town centre shop for Rochdale Football Club

Date published: 09 March 2010

Following the announcement last week of an innovative new initiative could help breathe new life into the town centre; Rochdale football club could be one of the first organisations to open a temporary shop in the town centre.

The Council and town centre management are currently working with the Club and the aim is locate a new shop will be located in one of the empty properties in the town centre.

Leader of the Council, Irene Davidson, said: “I am absolutely thrilled at the prospect of a designated shop selling kits and equipments to all Dale fans. The club has worked incredibly hard this season and their success is there for everybody to see. I hope everybody gets behind their local team and shows their support by helping us to get this proposal off the ground.”

Rochdale MP, Paul Rowen, added: “It is hoped that the enthusiasm shown by Rochdalians last year will continue this year and we will be able to celebrate Rochdale’s entry into the next Division.

"Having a shop in the Town Centre would be a welcome move and would hopefully attract fans both old and new. The new shop would be a boost for fans of the team and for the local economy.”

I am not a football fan of any kind, however, if this shop brings life to the town, excellent.
Yet, I hope that they have paid the same rent and council tax for these premisses as those who have been trading since the recession started - call it a loyalty bonus.

Mr Whitehead, I'm sure that they will have to pay rent and council tax.
Rochdale Football Club always pay their way, unlike some of the more 'succesful' clubs around.
What is profoundly depressing is your negative attitude towards the club opening a shop in the centre. The football club is one of the few chinks of light in what has become a depressed and depressing town.
Try going to Spotland and getting behind your town's team - it will help them pay the rent and council tax!
