Children to switch on Eid festival lights

Date published: 16/10/2006

Three local schoolchildren will switch on displays of lights to mark the Muslim festival of Eid in Rochdale.

The colourful light displays will be put up along Milkstone Road from its junction with Drake Street to its junction with Tweedale Street.

There will be multi-coloured displays strung across Milkstone Road and individual displays along both sides of the road.

The lights will be switched on at 6.30pm on Friday 20 October in a ceremony at the Tweedale Street end of the road.

The children switching on the lights are Adil Qureshi from Deeplish Community Primary School, Waqas Sheik from St. John's RC Primary School and Adil Haroon, Broadfield Primary School

They will arrive by limousine provided by A-list Limos.

The Mayor of Rochdale, Councillor Jean Hornby, will also attend the event.

Rochdale Council has arranged the display in co-operation with local businesses.

The festival of Eid-ul-Fitr marks the end of the holy month of Ramadan, during which many Muslims fast during daylight hours as an offering to Allah.  Celebration of Eid includes exchanging gifts and greetings, and eating special meals.
