Police urge children to stay safe on the streets

Date published: 20/07/2006

Young people in Rochdale are being urged by police to keep their valuables hidden and out of sight after a spate of robberies in the area.

The victims of the recent robberies have generally been between 10 and 16-years-old, with mobile phones or MP3 players the most common items stolen.

Operations are underway to target and arrest offenders and local police are stepping up patrols in the area, plus CCTV is in surveillance around the town centre.

Brian Farr, Crime Reduction Advisor for Rochdale police said: "We are asking parents and children to take care when they are out.  In order to reduce the chance of becoming a victim it is important that you keep your valuables, like mobile phones and MP3 players, safe and out of sight in a secure bag or pocket.

"Be extra alert, especially at cash points.  Make sure you stick to busy or well-lit areas and are with friends or an adult.  If travelling on a bus, train or tram sit close to the driver or move to a safer seat when possible.

"By just taking a few simple steps it’s easier to make yourself less of a target for street robbers."

Rochdale police are working hard not only to prevent offences but also to detect those that have been committed.  If anyone has any information regarding any of these robberies then I would urge them to ring Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111
