Drake Street reopens to traffic
Date published: 14 June 2006
The completion of an extensive scheme to improve the water quality of Rochdale's rivers means that Drake Street, an important route into the town centre, is now fully open to traffic again.
The scheme, carried out by KMI Water in behalf of United Utilities has been completed a fortnight ahead of schedule.
Drivers are reminded that access along South Parade is prohibited to all vehicles except buses and taxis between 7am and 6pm Monday to Saturday. Vehicles may use Fleece Street to access the town hall square and the Esplanade.
Drivers should also note that vehicles may not turn right from Water Street into Drake Street. They should also not turn right from River Street into Drake Street.
Background information
The closure of Drake Street at its junction with Smith Street/South Parade was required to improve the town's sewer system by enlarging a series of underground chambers which trap sewage debris and prevent it discharging into local water courses.
Known as sewer interceptors, the chambers act like safety valves for the sewer network.
At times of heavy rain, water run-off from roads, streets and rooftops drains into the sewers. The overflows take this excess and are allowed to discharge the combined storm and wastewater in order to protect the rest of the sewer network and the treatment works downstream.
