Festive spirit across the railways

Christmas Spirit is coming to Manchester's railways - that's the message from British Transport Police officers who will be involved in a special operation for the next few weeks, designed to make the festive season peaceful and safe for all.

Officers will be out and about on trains and at stations across Greater Manchester and will take action against anyone who behaves in a criminal or anti-social manner.

There is particular concern around those whose alcohol consumption either leads them to engage in violent behaviour or makes then vulnerable in the eyes of potential criminals.

Chief Inspector Graham Bamford, said: "We understand that at this time of year, with Christmas fast approaching, people will be out at parties and will be consuming alcohol.

"We certainly do not want to spoil this and would simply ask that anyone drinking alcohol does so responsibly.

"There is no doubt that alcohol is a major contributory factor to other types of crime, particularly violence, when the effects of the booze lower inhibitions and tolerance levels.

"And drink can also make you a target. If you have consumed excessive amounts of alcohol your awareness is diminished as is you ability to properly gauge a situation.

"Sadly there are those who will take advantage of people in this state and will not think twice about using the drunkenness of someone else to their benefit."

In light of this warning BTP officers will be taking part in Operation Christmas Spirit - a special initiative designed to keep passengers and rail staff safe this festive season.

CI Bamford added: "Officers will be on the lookout for anyone causing trouble on the railway and will not hesitate to take action against anyone caught doing so.

"We do not want to ruin Christmas for anybody, but will not tolerate any behaviour that is anti-social or threatens the safety of others.

“We want everyone in Manchester to have a happy and safe Christmas and new year and will do what we can to make this happen."

• Stay awake while travelling
• Look after friends and colleagues
• Keep an even temper
• Zip up your bags
• Travel with a friend-if possible
• Report suspicious behaviour
• Mind the gap
• Keep your luggage with you
• Have a happy Christmas and safe New Year from British Transport Police.
