Respect is the key to safer sex

Date published: 12 February 2011

Show consideration and respect for your partner by using a condom during sex, especially if it is a new partner or a casual relationship - That’s the message from the Health Protection Agency (HPA) North West as the Agency reveals that despite some improvement rates of sexually transmitted infections remain worryingly high throughout the region.

Dr. Roberto Vivancos, the Agency’s Regional Sexual Health Lead, warned: “Unprotected sex with new or multiple partners is risky. It is also unfair because you may unknowingly be carrying an infection that could be passed on to others. Our message is don’t take that chance with your sexual health and respect the health of others.

“Safer sex means having sex with fewer partners, always using a condom, especially with new or casual partners, and being aware that alcohol and drugs may lead to you taking risks with your health. It’s important to understand that alcohol and drugs can reduce our inhibitions, leading us to take risks that we might later regret.

“Anyone having unprotected sex outside of a steady relationship may be at risk of a sexually transmitted infection. If you feel that you are at risk, it is important to be tested.”
