Tribute planned for Sir Cyril

Date published: 10 March 2011

Plans to install a blue heritage plaque in honour of the late Sir Cyril Smith – Rochdale’s most famous MP - are in the pipe line.

Various ideas for a tribute have been suggested but the preferred option is a commemorative plaque to be placed in the Rochdale Town Hall.

Both Sir Cyril’s family and the Liberal Democrat team in Rochdale feel that the plaque would be a fitting tribute, especially considering Sir Cyril’s association with the Town Hall.

The Deputy Leader of the Liberal Democrats, Councillor Dale Mulgrew, said: “This is a fitting tribute for a great Rochdalian.”

The proposal is now being drawn up in to a report to put before Councillors at the Action Resources Committee meeting on 29 March 2011.

Councillors will be asked to approve the spend of £300 and to approve a location for the plaque.
