Countdown to new recycling and refuse service for Rochdale

Date published: 23 January 2008

With just two weeks to go before the new alternate weekly collection service starts for all residents who currently receive a Thursday collection, Rochdale Borough Council are currently delivering the new green and blue wheeled  bins and blue bags.

To date over 11,000 new wheeled bins have been delivered and residents have been sent three different information leaflets. A total of 17 roadshows have been arranged outside community centres and supermarkets of which 9 have already taken place.

Dennis Pennill, Waste Services Manager said: "It has been really reassuring how positive residents are about the new service. People are very keen to recycle and the new alternate weekly collection gives them the chance to recycle both plastic bottles and cardboard as well as glass, cans and paper."

Councillor Wera Hobhouse attended one of the road shows in Rochdale and added: "We have listened to residents concerns about space issues and are delivering the smaller 140 litre wheeled bin, we are trying to be as flexible and accommodating as possible and not adopting a 'one-size fits all' approach.

"In the long term this will save the council millions of pounds in landfill taxes that will be invested in improving local services and help to keep the council tax low."
