Assault and robbery: appeal for witnesses

Date published: 06 August 2012

Police in Rochdale are appealing to three women to come forward after they came to a man's aid when he was assaulted and robbed in the street.

At about 4.15pm on Sunday 22 July 2012, an 18-year-old man was walking on Baron Street from the town centre when he was approached by two men.

The pair demanded he hand over his mobile. When he said he didn't have one, he was punched in the stomach.

The blow, which could have been with a knuckle-duster, sent the victim crashing to the ground.

The offenders then rifled through the victim's pockets and left with cash.

Three women passing by then helped the victim up.

The offenders are described as Asian men in their late teens and of slim build.

Police Constable Jackie Butterworth said: "The women left before anyone got the chance to get their details.

"I would appeal to these women to come forward as they could be vital witnesses to our investigation.

"These are two dangerous men who are clearly willing to use violence to get what they want.

"I would urge anyone who may have witnessed this incident, or may have seen anyone matching their description acting suspiciously in the area to call us."

Anyone with any information is asked to call police on 0161 856 8574 or call the independent charity Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
