Open spaces and derelict buildings

Date published: 28 August 2012

Ghulam Rasul Shahzad and Christine Mathewson, Coordinators of Rochdale Environmental Action Group (REAG) are asking the local authority to take appropriate action regarding open spaces and derelict buildings in the area of Milkstone & Deeplish.

They say: "There are a number of derelict buildings which have been empty for many years. These buildings, if demolished, improved or re-built, could generate income and create jobs in the area.

"Open spaces are becoming dumping places and people are throwing their litter and rubbish there."

REAG urge everyone in Rochdale to share the collective responsibility of ‘Keep Britain Tidy’ and, in particular ‘Keep Rochdale Tidy’.

Ghulam Rasul Shahzad and Christine Mathewson, Co-ordinators, are asking the local authority to take appropriate enforcement measures in Milkstone & Deeplish.

The Group meet at 10am every Saturday at the Castlemere Community Centre for the 'Clean Up'. Anyone wishing to join, please contact Ghulam Rasul Shahzad 07851 323 612 or Christine Mathewson 07788 656 666.

Ghulam and Christine say: "A ‘Big Thank You’ to all those who turned out for the Clean Up last week. The Environmental Management team provided litter picks, gloves and plastic bags, and to Councillor Terry Linden who informed us that he had allocated £300 for the provision of larger bins in the area."
