Take free cycle training for a fit 2013

Date published: 11 December 2012

Planning a New Year resolution to get more active, but need some help? Then Transport for Greater Manchester’s (TfGM) free cycling course could be just the thing for you.

As part of its Commuter Cycle Project, TfGM is offering free refresher adult cycle training throughout Greater Manchester at flexible times and locations.

It is specifically aimed at those who want to sharpen up their cycling skills as a means for getting to-and-from work in a healthy and environmentally-friendly way.

Qualified cycling instructors provide the teaching which participants can take day, night, starting off from home, or even the workplace.

The course includes tips and tricks for building your confidence, dealing with real-life situations on the road and cycling safely and responsibly, including during the darker winter days and at night.

Instructors can also give advice on route planning and suggest suitable routes to get from home to work and visa-versa.

Dave Newton, TfGM’s Transport Strategy Director, said: “2012 has been a memorable year for cycling in this country for lots of reasons, such as the performances of Bradley Wiggins and Team GB at London 2012.

“It is a great way to keep fit and active and if you want to start cycling again for 2013, TfGM’s free course is a great way to sharpen up your skills on a bike.

“By using a bike, say rather than your car, to commute to work, you are also benefiting the environment as well as your health and wallet.

“We have fully qualified instructors available to give people a free, two-hour one-to-one session. They’ll even come to you - daytime, in the evening or at weekends - you choose.

“They will coach you through real-life situations, both on and off the roads. They'll also be able to offer advice on route planning, confidence tips and how to deal with the more challenging winter conditions.”

To find out more about the adult cycle training, and the many other ways TfGM is encouraging people to get back on their bikes thanks to funding from the Government’s Local Sustainable Transport Fund, or to book a session, simply call 0300 123 1675.
