Littleborough Rushbearing Festival

Date published: 20 July 2013

Hundreds of families joined the fun in Hare Hill Park, Littleborough today (Saturday 20 July) for the first day of the annual Littleborough Rushbearing Festival.

The park was lined with a variety of stalls including local food such as bread, cheese and olives, games to keep the children entertained and services such as lifeboats and children’s centres.

Steve Lister, Chairman of LEAF (Littleborough Events and Association Forum) and organiser of the festival said: “There are more people here than ever. This is the best year so far.”

As well as numerous stalls and games, festivalgoers were treated to performances from Trick4Treats Dog Display team, Taiko Drummers and Morris dancing from Hornbeam Molly, Saddleworth Clog and Garland and The Thieving Magpie dance troupes.

The announcer for the day, said: “Without the Thieving Magpies this wouldn’t have been possible. They organised all of the dancing and designed the Rushcart.”

Steve Lister added: “Everything has run smoothly today and we’re hoping for a good day tomorrow.”

The Festival is made possible by LEAF. The group consists of representatives and voluntary groups and businesses in Littleborough. Steve said: “LEAF is about different voluntary groups coming together to organise everything.”

The Festival will continue on tomorrow (Sunday 21 July) with the Rushcart procession starting at The Moorcock Inn at 11am.
