Greenwoods and Thornton's closing down

Date published: 17 August 2013

Greenwoods is the latest town centre retailer to fall victim to the high street crisis with the Wheatsheaf Centre shop closing down.

Greenwoods staff were told last week that the store would be closing down but staff don’t have much information yet.

One staff member said: “I have no idea why we are closing. I don’t know anything.”

Barbara Carter, who was shopping on Yorkshire Street, said: “It’s looking very bleak.

“It’s a huge shame about Greenwoods because it has been here for a long time. I got both my sons suits from there.”

Jean Hindle, another local shopper, said: “They just aren’t getting the custom any more. With big supermarkets opening and selling everything there is no need to come here.”

Thornton’s, on Yorkshire Street, is also soon set to close with staff finding out a couple of weeks ago that their branch would be closing its doors for good.

One lady who had visited Thornton’s said: “I’ve heard they won't reduce the rents so that’s why they are all closing.”

Currently there are six empty units (Greenwoods will make it 7) out of 27 (26%) in the Wheatsheaf Centre and on Yorkshire Street there are twelve closed shops with to let signs above their doors.
