A man conned his way into woman's home and stole cash

Date published: 04 November 2013

At around 2pm on Friday 1 November 2013, a man went to a house on Bury Old Road in Heywood.

He knocked on the door and told the 78-year-old woman at the house he was from the housing association, Guinness Trust, and needed to check the central heating.

The woman let him into the house and while there he stole cash from her purse.

The man is described as white, around 16 or 17-years-old, 5ft tall and slim. He has short dark hair and was wearing a black knee length coat, dirty jeans and trainers. He was carrying a letter from the Guinness Trust.

Detective Constable Nick Price said: “This young man has preyed on an elderly and vulnerable member of our community and he needs to be identified so it doesn’t happen again.

“If anyone has any information about the person responsible or you are concerned please call us.

“We want to remind people to be cautious when opening the door to anyone you don’t know.

“If you have a door chain, put it on and ask them who they are and what they want.

“People without an appointment or identification should be treated as suspicious. Do not let them in your home and call police.”

Anyone with information should call police on 0161 856 8701 or the independent charity Crimestoppers, anonymously, on 0800 555 111.
