Contraband cigarettes uncovered in Middleton

A samurai sword, dagger and air rifle, more than 20,000 illicit cigarettes, 40kg of hand rolling tobacco and a large stash of male impotency drugs during a raid at a property in Langley.

A 58-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of counterfeiting offences under the Trade Marks Act 1994 and bailed until December.

The haul was uncovered after trading standards officers saw a man selling illicit tobacco at the Harbord Harbord pub in Middleton town centre and raided a property associated with him.

Once at the address, the team found the cigarettes, which were counterfeit and non-duty paid, stuffed into the lining of a sofa as well as 800 sildigra–100 tablets, which are used to treat erectile dysfunction.

Councillor Jacqui Beswick, Cabinet Member for Regulation at Rochdale Borough Council, said: “Activities like this pose a clear risk to our communities. Drugs to treat medical problems should only be prescribed by a doctor and cigarettes should display all the appropriate health warnings.

“The profits derived from selling counterfeit goods are also often used to fund more serious criminal activity so we will continue to work with the police to stamp it out.
