Heywood gym receives donation of equipment

Date published: 15 November 2013

The People's Gym in Heywood has received a donation of boxing equipment from Ringside Boxing Equipment.

Equipment donated to the gym included gloves and pads.

Gym owner Kieran Farrell said: “It was very kind. It is much appreciated.”

“It comes in handy if some of the kids don’t have gloves. Now they have some to use.”

“People voted for me to get the donation so that is nice,” added Kieran.

The People’s Gym was opened in June 2013 by former lightweight boxer Kieran Farrell who had to quit the sport due to suffering a bleed on the brain after losing his English title fight against Anthony Crolla in December 2012.

Kieran, who collapsed as the fight result was announced, was rushed to hospital and swelling on his brain had to be monitored. Due to the fitness and condition that Kieran was in, he made a full recovery but had to retire from boxing at age 22.

Ringside Boxing Equipment is a non profit organisation that donates to causes that work with children with behavioural problems throughout the UK.

Director of Ringside Boxing Equipment, Lee Rawlings said: “We know how difficult it is for these parties financially as most get no funding and rely on membership fees and donations. We are proud to be in a position to help and being an ex boxer, I know how important it is for these clubs to get the young girls and boys through the door. Not only does it teach individuals discipline and respect but it gives them something to focus on and keeps them off of the streets.”
