Official figures show significant reduction in casualties on Greater Manchester’s roads

Date published: 15 April 2014

The number of road casualties across Greater Manchester has fallen year-on-year, with official figures showing that fatalities have been reduced by over a quarter.

The latest statistics verified and released by the Department for Transport (DfT) show that the total number of casualties on Greater Manchester’s roads fell by 10 per cent, equating to 614 fewer accidents during 2013 compared to the previous year.

The statistics, which cover the 2013 calendar year, also show that fatal injuries on Greater Manchester’s roads fell by 28.4% – a reduction of 14 incidents year-on-year.

There was also a 4.3% reduction in the number of serious casualties in comparison to the previous 12 months.

Reducing the number of road casualties in Greater Manchester is a key priority for Transport for Greater Manchester (TfGM), which works in partnership with Greater Manchester’s 10 local authorities and several other public bodies including Greater Manchester Police to further reduce the number of road casualties.

The Greater Manchester Casualty Reduction Partnership delivers various initiatives that work towards reducing the number of road casualties in Greater Manchester, including education and training through the Greater Manchester National Driver Intervention Scheme and local delivery projects.

Dr Jon Lamonte, Chief Executive of TfGM, said: “The reduction in the number of people involved in collisions on Greater Manchester’s roads is fantastic news, but there is still work to be done: in my view, any casualty is one too many.

“So we will continue to be vigilant by working with local authorities and key partners to keep everyone on our roads safe, to ensure that this positive trend continues.”
