Residents frustrated with traffic light signalling

Date published: 18 April 2014

Residents across the borough are frustrated with the way in which traffic signals are operating with some describing them as ‘ludicrous.’

One resident said: “I could give lots of examples but take for instance the traffic lights at the entrance to Hopwood Hall Middleton campus. The lights are almost permanently on red for those travelling along Rochdale Road towards Rochdale only changing to green for about four seconds.”

The resident went on to say: “There must be a hidden agenda similar to when they tried bringing the congestion charge into Greater Manchester. Leading up to that many things were done to actively create congestion.”

Traffic signals in Greater Manchester are the responsibility of Transport for Greater Manchester.

A Transport for Greater Manchester spokesperson said: “We have not received any comments or complaints about the operation of the Hopwood College–Rochdale Road junction to date, despite a fault with a vehicle detection system in the area which we will have addressed by the end of the month.

“We don’t receive many complaints about traffic signals in Rochdale in general, overall, but if we are informed of a problem then we will investigate and take action, such as adjusting signal timings, to deal with the issue as effectively as we can.

“We have a dedicated hotline (0161 244 1511) and email address (gmutc@tfgm.com) and we’d encourage people to use these channels if they have something they want to flag up with us.”
