Greenwich councillors have had a change of heart and have confirmed that a memorial to Middleton soldier Lee Rigby will go ahead in Woolwich.
It is understood that a memorial for Fusilier Rigby is to be built near to the scene of his brutal murder with an exact location yet to be decided.
The change comes after councillors in the area originally stated that a memorial would not go ahead. This received criticism from Lyn Rigby, the mother of the late soldier who criticised the council and their attitude towards the idea of a memorial.
The family and their supporters have been pressing for a tribute to the solider for some time now with a petition regarding a memorial gathering over 80,000 signatures.
A Royal Borough of Greenwich spokesperson said: “The Royal Borough of Greenwich can confirm that it is in discussions with both Lee Rigby’s family and the Army about the issue of remembering Lee.
"The discussions are on-going and we have no further statements to make at this stage.”
The plans have also been welcomed by Mayor of London Boris Johnson.
Drummer Lee Rigby was tragically killed on 22 May last year.
Michael Adebowale and Michael Adebolajo were found guilty of his murder and are currently serving life sentences in prison.
