Police to disperse troublemakers in town centre
Date published: 31 December 2007
Rochdale Town Centre is to start the New Year with a dispersal order, in a bid to reduce anti-social behaviour.
From 1 January to 31 March 2008, police and police community support officers will have the power to challenge groups of two or more youths, congregating in the town centre. Any youngsters under the age of sixteen will be escorted home if they are suspected of taking part in criminal activity and they are in the area after 9pm.
Inspector James Troisi of Rochdale North Neighbourhood Policing Team said: "Everyone has the right to feel safe when they are in the town centre but unfortunately due to certain groups of young people this is not always the case.
"The dispersal order is one of many tactics being used to target anti-social behaviour, but this will help to keep the area clear of anyone trying to cause trouble."
The order will cover St. Mary’s Gate, Manchester Road, Drake Street, Milnrow Road, Molesworth and John Street. Any groups of two or more people can be dispersed and anyone who does not live locally may be required to leave the area and not return for the next 24 hours.
Inspector Troisi continued: "I hope this order will help to reassure the local community that we are responding to their needs and also show the young people of Rochdale who blight the area that we will not tolerate their behaviour."
