College steps up a gear with new technology

Date published: 23 July 2014

Hopwood Hall College has stepped up a gear with the purchase of a brand new hybrid car which will be used by motor vehicle students to gain an insight into this new technology.

The brand new Prius, in the College’s corporate blue, will be used by third year students to learn first-hand about hybrid technology, silent motors and kinetic energy. The car was officially delivered to the Technology Centre last week so that it’s ready for students when they return to College after the summer break.

Terry Collier, Centre Director for Technology, said: “The technology in these vehicles is extremely advanced and very different to stand alone petrol cars. The students will be able to study how the hybrid uses its brake system to regenerate energy and how the petrol engine kicks in at around 30mph.” Terry adds: “It will be great to be able to let them see this new, advanced technology in action and gain an understanding of the importance of new greener technologies.”

The car was bought from RRG Toyota Rochdale, supporters of the College and the deal included a generous discount and free sign writing. RRG has links with the College as a former student is currently working there as a technician and the dealership and the College are now in discussions about student visits and work experience placements.
