Theo Walsh, who shares his birthday with Prince George, celebrates in London with family and The Royal Mint

One-year-old Theo Walsh shares his birthday with Prince George and was treated to a trip to London to receive a limited edition £5 coin  bearing the heraldic Royal Arms design from the Royal Mint to mark the joint birthday.

Theo, who went to London on Saturday (19 July) with his parents Neil Walsh, originally from Castleton and Grace Walsh, originally from Spotland, was chosen at random out of 1,765 babies born on the same day as Prince George to head to the celebrations in London.

Neil, who now lives in Walsden, said: “We randomly got an email from the Royal Mint letting us know that we had been selected at random to go to London for the celebration. Altogether there were eleven babies who share their birthday with Prince George at the event.”

Shane Bissett, Director of Commemorative Coin and Bullion at The Royal Mint said: “The birth of Prince George of Cambridge was a joyous occasion not just for Their Royal Highnesses The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge but also for the whole nation. As he turns one we wanted to mark this historical moment with Theo who shares this special birthday, with a commemorative sterling silver £5 coin he can treasure forever.

“The choice of a silver coin is significant too as crossing the precious metal across a babies palm is a way to wish them wealth and good health throughout their life, whilst the £5 coin is a favourite for royal celebrations”.

Theo and the family, which included Theo’s three-year old sister Lillie, who shares her birthday with the Queen, were treated to afternoon tea at the Stafford Hotel and to a photo shoot in St James Park.

Neil said: “It was fantastic. It was a really good day. Our daughter is obsessed with princesses so it was nice for her to see Buckingham Palace.

"The photo shoot was also good but it was hard work trying to get eleven babies all looking in one direction and not crying and things,” said Neil.

As well as the afternoon tea and photo shoot, the family received a limited edition coin to mark the milestone.

Neil added: “We got the fourth coin to be minted and there were only 7,500 made. Someone showed me the coin online and they are selling for about £500 so they are really sought after but we will be keeping ours as a momento.”

The family also received a limited edition coin when Theo was born.

Theo was born at 09.30am on 22 July 2013 and at the time, Neil and his wife Grace were not aware of the fuss that would soon come with sharing the day with the future King of England.

Neil said: “We didn’t even know what was going on really. When we got to the hospital the nurses were talking about someone going into labour and we didn’t realise they meant Kate Middleton until later on.

“We didn’t expect the fuss at all. The only problem is now that we find ourselves comparing Theo to George. Like my wife was saying that George is already walking now and we find ourselves doing it by accident. I guess that kind of thing is likely happen when you share your birthday with a royal baby.”
