Rochdale Auto Rescue help deliver special funeral request

Date published: 29 July 2014

Rochdale Auto Rescue have helped a motor enthusiast with a final request at his funeral. A recovery truck from the company ferrried the coffin of William Harry Officer to Oldham Crematorium yesterday afternoon (Monday 28 July).

John Hazley, from Rochdale Auto Rescue, said: “I thought it was an amazing idea. We were asked to do it and we couldn’t say no.”

John was approached by Williams’s son to carry out his dad’s final wish.

“William was involved with the motor industry for a long time and worked with recovery and so he wanted things to be done this way,” said John.

John picked the coffin up from Hedley Jackson Funeral Directors at 1.40pm and had it placed on the back of his truck. The coffin was then driven through Shaw town centre to Oldham Cemetery for the funeral.

Rochdale Auto Rescue provided the transport for free and have done similar things like this before – the company helped with transport for a funeral in 2005.

John added: “We have done it all for free. The family did offer to pay but we said no. We can do things for free every now and again.”
