‘Norden Riviera: Rochdale by the sea’ book contributes to local history

Date published: 31 July 2014

Gary Heywood-Everett, 66, has just completed a short non-fiction book about a lido and ambitious leisure complex that was open in Norden from 1935-1966 called ‘Norden Riviera: Rochdale by the sea’.

Gary said: “I’ve recently retired and I became fascinated by the idea of a lido in Rochdale after talking to local residents. I’ve lived in the Rochdale area all my life and I wanted to contribute to the local history.

“It really interested me as the thought of a lido in Rochdale seemed absurd to me, as we don’t have the best weather. Unfortunately, I never got to visit it but I decided to find out more information and write this book.

“It held activities such as horse riding, cricket matches, and dances in the specially made dance hall.

“A lot of local businessmen put their money into the lido, and it unfortunately closed because of finances. People became uninterested in holidaying locally and it closed down in 1966.”

‘Norden Riviera: Rochdale by the sea’ is available now.
