Johnsons Dry Cleaners accused of ruining wedding dress

Date published: 31 July 2014

Tracey Kelly, from Newbold in Rochdale, has accused Johnsons Dry Cleaners of ruining her wedding dress after it was returned a different colour, ripped and creased.

She states that she was advised by a staff member at the Burnley branch of Johnsons, a woman that she knows, that the dress would not run and that the item could be cleaned.

Tracey said: “I was told that that there was a 1% chance that the dress would run and was told that there was a 99% chance that it would not run. She told me this a number of times. It is soul destroying to see that my perfect wedding dress has been ruined.”

When Tracey collected the dress she took it home to find that the red colouring had run on to the ivory colour turning parts of the dress pink, the underskirt was ripped and the dress was creased.

“I would have been ok if she had told me that the dress couldn’t be cleaned and that she could press it but she didn’t even do that. She told me it could be done so I left it with her and now it is ruined,” said Tracey.

Since the return of the dress, Tracey has been given £100 compensation by the staff member personally but Tracey is not entirely pleased with that. She said: “I was given £100 which I was told was from her pocket but to me that’s not good enough. I feel physically sick that this has happened. Head office has told me that there is nothing they can do either.”

A spokesperson for Johnsons Dry Cleaners said: “Although our normal procedure was not followed due to a personal relationship, the cleaning of the dress went ahead despite the complainant being made aware of the risks of doing this.

“Our team member has offered a compensation amount from her own personal bank account and of her own volition. This full and final settlement was signed by the complainant.

“It is our policy for customers to request cleaning of items by visiting our stores or through approved agents, to ensure that communication is clear and that the transaction and instructions is between us and them.

“We will however conduct a full investigation and act on the findings accordingly.”
