Karate Kid Troy Swanick appears on The One Show

Date published: 13 August 2014

Eight-year-old Troy Swanick, from Syke, believed to be one of the youngest black belts in Shukokai Karate in the UK, made an appearance on BBC One’s, The One Show on Monday (12 August) alongside film star Jackie Chan.

Troy, a Healey Primary School Pupil, earned his black belt in karate last year at the age of seven.

Filming in Rochdale last week, Troy recreated some of Jackie Chan’s most famous scenes from The Drunken Master alongside presenter Dominic Littlewood and chatted about his karate career.

Troy was then invited to the London studios to appear on the show alongside his idol Jackie Chan and was accompanied by his mum, dad and Sensei Dervish.

Troy’s dad Paul described the appearance on the show as “unbelievable.” He said: “It was an unbelievable experience for us all. It was a really good day and Troy loved it.”

Troy was then given the opportunity to spar with Jackie live on TV and was able to ask him a question and gain some valuable advice about his future career, which Troy hopes will be in acting.

Paul added: “Obviously a lot of Jackie Chan’s films were made before Troy was even born so he has picked up the love of him from me but he loved meeting him. I think he was a bit speechless and shell shocked at first.”

Speaking to Rochdale Online Sensei Dervish Dervish, of Kaizen-Do Karate, said: “Because Jackie Chan was on the show promoting his new film, the BBC got in touch with us to do a little feature on Troy because of his achievement.

“It was great to film and great to be a part of. The experience didn’t phase Troy one bit.”
