Crime Prevention tips for the week

There has been an increase in theft from motor vehicles over the past week in the Heywood and Middleton area. Please ensure when leaving your car you remove or take any items with you such as sat navs, mobile phones, iPads, etc. If you can’t remove them from your car then please keep them out of sight in the boot.

The cost of replacing a broken window is often far more than the value of goods stolen. If you can, take your belongings with you rather than leaving them in the car. If you can’t, lock everything out of sight in the boot.

In particular, and in no specific order, never leave the following anywhere in your car:

  • Removable radio fronts
  • Portable satellite navigation systems and their mounting cradle (sat navs)
  • Mobile Phones
  • Golf clubs
  • iPods/ iPads
  • Handbags (don’t leave them under seats)
  • Laptops, computers and briefcases
  • Cheque, credit and debit cards
  • Items of clothing
  • Driving documents and personal correspondence

Always try and remove these items if you can. That old coat on the back seat may be worthless but thieves won’t know that. They may break in to see if you’ve left any money or cards in one of the pockets.

Whether removable or not, all equipment should be permanently marked with the vehicle registration or your postcode. Make a note of the serial number and keep it in a safe place.
