Whitworth residents get their dogs micro-chipped for free

Date published: 17 August 2014

Whitworth residents were given the opportunity to have their dogs micro-chipped for free yesterday (Saturday 16 August).

The event, which was held and organised by Rossendale Responsible Pets in conjunction with the Dogs Trust saw a number of pet owners take the opportunity to microchip their pet.

Michaela Holt from Rossendale Responsible Pets said: “It has been absolutely phenomenal. In about two hours we saw over 60 people come in and people just kept on coming.”

Held at Whitworth Workers between 12pm and 4pm, the micro-chipping process took a few seconds to complete with many of the dogs not even flinching.

Michaela added: “Many of the dogs don’t even move when they have it done. You would think that the smaller dogs would cry but we often see many of the smaller dogs just getting on with it and today we did have a rather big dog crying the building down.”

After being micro-chipped owners were given all of the necessary paper work and dogs were given treats.

Micro-chips are about the size of a grain of rice and contain all of the contact information for the owner. From 2016, under plans intended to cut a rise in stay dogs, every dog owner will have to have their pet chipped.

Rossendale Responsible Pets try and hold their micro-chipping events as regular as possible.

Michaela added: “After today's event we will go back to where we started and do the circuit again and will eventually come back to Whitworth.”

As well as the micro-chipping, a grooming and nail cutting service was also being offered to dog owners.
