Get in the saddle for National Cycle to Work Day

Date published: 27 August 2014

Employees are being asked to take a pledge of cycling allegiance and travel to work on two wheels next Thursday for this year’s National Cycle to Work Day.

The annual event – championed by multi gold medal winning Paralympic cyclist Dame Sarah Storey and supported by Transport for Greater Manchester (TfGM) – encourages workers to ditch their usual mode of transport and cycle to work on Thursday 4 September 2014.

Last year’s event saw 20,000 commuters hit the streets and cycle over a quarter of a million miles, and organisers believe they can move up a gear this year and beat the 2013 figures.

TfGM is asking as many people as possible in Greater Manchester to pledge their support at www.cycletoworkday.org and experience the benefits that cycling to and from work can offer.

A number of large employers have already joined TfGM in promoting the initiative to their employees, including Greater Manchester Fire & Rescue Service, which has around 2,000 members of staff.

National Cycle to Work Day is just one part of a month of activity, as TfGM launches the Better By Cycle challenge to encourage people to make more journeys by bike throughout September.

The Better By Cycle Challenge takes place 1-30 September and is open to everyone who lives and works in Greater Manchester, with offers and prizes up for grabs for those taking part.

The challenge will reward people for making more cycling journeys throughout September, not how far or fast they cycle.

All cycle journeys logged online will count towards a personal total of ‘BikeMiles’, which can then be exchanged for a number of discounted offers and vouchers.

Weekly and overall prizes will also be up for grabs, and for the top three workplaces that log the most cycle journeys on average during the challenge – including a folding bike, taster sessions at the Manchester Velodrome, and bike maintenance equipment.
