GMP warning - Think Safe Drink Safe
Date published: 28 December 2007
Revellers across Greater Manchester are being reminded to 'Think Safe Drink Safe' this New Year’s Eve, one of the busiest nights of the year.
Police say a few simple measures can be taken on a night out to reduce the risk of falling victim to crime, such as sticking with friends, pacing drinks and planning to get home safely.
Officers will carry out frequent high-visibility patrols in all town centres to offer reassurance to the public, and taxis in Manchester City Centre have been wrapped in messages to remind people to stay safe when they are out enjoying themselves.
Alcohol is a major contributor to disorder and violent crime, and police will be working very closely with licensees regarding the irresponsible sale of alcohol and underage drinking. They will also take tough action against anyone intent on spoiling the fun for the vast majority.
In addition, officers are urging people not to leave themselves vulnerable to sexual assaults by 'night-hiking'. This refers to people who attempt to get unsafe transport home after a night out, including trying to get into vehicles that have stopped at traffic lights.
Assistant Chief Constable for Greater Manchester Police, David Thompson, said: "Our overriding concern is that everyone should be able to enjoy the New Year’s Eve festivities, and we will intervene at the earliest sign of trouble. However, revellers can help us by remembering simple safety tips like sticking with friends and pacing drinks, which will greatly reduce their chances of becoming a victim of crime."
