Date published: 15 September 2014

Rehabilitation workers in Rochdale, who help people to recover from strokes and other complex neurological conditions, have won an award for providing outstanding care to patients.

The Neuro-Rehabilitation Team, which is part of Pennine Care NHS Foundation Trust, was voted a winner in the Trust-wide Principles of Care Awards.

The team provides specialist interventions to individuals who have an acquired neurological condition, working in partnership with the person, their family/carers to achieve goals to maximise social inclusion and wellbeing.

Hilary Fitton, 70, of Littleborough has treated by the service on several occasions over 18 months after suffering several falls as a result of Parkinson’s disease.

She said: “The staff have helped me to get my self-esteem and independence back and helped me to make the most of each day.”

Terry Bloxsome, 77, from Middleton received support after losing mobility following a stroke.

He said: “I lost the use of the right hand side of my body but I’m slowly getting it back. I can now walk and write a bit which I couldn’t a few months ago.

“The care I received was fantastic.”

Ashleigh Knowles, the Neuro-Rehabilitation Team Clinical Lead, praised staff for their compassion and dedication to patients and their families.

She said: “As a team we focus on the patient as an individual and work with them to identify meaningful goals, such as walking to the local shop for groceries or dressing themselves independently, and work with them to achieve that goal.”

The Principles of Care Awards recognise the way services embody the Trust’s 10 Principles of Care which include providing safe and effective services, meaningful and individualised care and clear and open communication between staff, patients and families.

The team is now in the running to be declared the Trust’s overall Principles of Care Awards winner, which will be announced at the annual general meeting on Tuesday 7 October, 2014 from 5pm to 7.30pm at Queen Elizabeth Hall, West Street, Oldham, OL1 1NL.
