Liz McInnes selected as Labour candidate for Heywood and Middleton

Date published: 15 September 2014

Labour Party members tonight (Monday 15 September) elected Liz McInnes to be Labour’s candidate for Heywood and Middleton at the by-election on 9 October.

Ms McInnes lives in Rossendale, where she is a councillor, with her 17-year-old son. She was born in Oldham and lived in Middleton for 11 years.

She works at the Royal Oldham Hospital as a biochemist.

Liz McInnes, said: “I am delighted to have been selected as Labour’s candidate in Heywood and Middleton.

“Jim Dobbin was a true public servant – first serving our NHS and then as our local MP – and he will be greatly missed. So I am deeply honoured that local people have chosen me to be Labour’s candidate in this by-election.

“People in Heywood and Middleton have been let down by this Tory-led Government. For working people things are getting tougher. Getting a doctor’s appointment is too difficult and people are worried about the future of Rochdale Infirmary, North Manchester General and Fairfield General. And we all know that UKIP aren’t the answer – they don’t share our values.

“Only Labour can make Britain better off, putting hardworking families first with a plan to tackle the cost-of-living crisis. Only Labour will stop the Tory privatisation of our most treasured institution – the NHS. Only Labour will stick up for people in Heywood and Middleton, I am looking forward to leading that fight.”
