Lucky escape for residents after chip pan fire tears through house in Heywood

Date published: 29 September 2014

Two men and one woman managed to escape a house after a chip pan caught fire in the early hours of Saturday (27 September) morning.

The kitchen of the house was destroyed as flames tore through the property after a man left a chip pan unattended after a night out.

The two men and the woman were taken to North Manchester General Hospital suffering smoke inhalation. Their condition was not thought to be serious.

Crews from Rochdale and Heywood were called to a terraced house on Melton Close, Heywood at 12:39am on Saturday.

Station Manager Ian Tracey who was in charge of the incident said: “A guy who lives in the house has come home after a night out and started to cook chips in a chip pan.

"He's left the pan of food unattended and a fire has gutted the kitchen and the back bedroom of the property.

"At one point we thought the fire had spread through the roof space and in to neighbouring properties, but thankfully it was only smoke. The crews did a great job to get the fire under control and stop it from spreading to other homes.

"If anyone is thinking of coming home and cooking after a night out don't do it. Get yourself a kebab or some chips from a takeaway - it could save your life.”
