Public consultation to take place regarding Derby Street Nursery

Date published: 29 September 2014

Members of Rochdale Council Cabinet decided this evening (Monday 29 September) that a public consultation will take place regarding the potential closure of Derby Street Nursery in Heywood.

In a report presented to the cabinet, which outlined the Nursery School Review, three out of four nurseries were identified as finanically viable with Derby Street Nursery being identified as not being financially viable for the next two years.

It was stated that out of 78 available places for the upcoming school term, only seven parents chose Derby Street for their children.

The parents of the seven children who were interested in the nursery were helped to find new nurseries with all children having found suitable options for the start of term.

If the council were to continue with an empty nursery, it could cost them up to £500,000 for 2016/2017.

Councillor Richard Farnell, chairman of the cabinet committee said: “People look to be voting with their feet regarding this and if the nursery is not being used then we have to face up to reality and look at its future.”

Councillors then agreed to undertake a full public consultation with a report set to go back to the cabinet.
