Crime Prevention
This week’s crime prevention focuses on Asian jewellery theft.

Rochdale police are reminding residents to take all necessary security precautions to keep their property safe and deter offenders looking to steal Asian gold and other valuable jewellery.

Asian gold jewellery plays an important role in religious festivities and celebrations with many items handed down through generations. These are not just valuable items but also have great sentimental value which cannot be replaced. Very often these items of jewellery are only in a person’s house for a short while during the period of a ceremony.

Take every step possible to protect and secure your home and property within it and please consider the following crime prevention advice:

  • Ensure homes look occupied when you are out – use a timer switch to set a radio and/or lamp to come on.
  • Ensure that jewellery is not left out on display.
  • Ensure that you have good window and door security and use it.
  • Double lock UPVC doors using the keys as well as lifting the handle even if just going out briefly.
  • Store your valuable jewellery in an approved safe. Check with your insurance company before purchasing a safe that it meets their criteria.
  • If you have an alarm ensure that you always activate it at night and when you leave the property.
  • If you have UPVC doors ensure they are fully secured by double locking them using the key as well as lifting the handle.
  • Photograph your jewellery, this way, if it is stolen the police will have a clear description of the items, also use forensic marking to identify your jewellery.
  • Ensure that all of your jewellery is adequately covered by your insurance.
  • If possible, store jewellery in a bank safety deposit box.
  • Register items and other valuables via a database such as immobilise”

Rochdale police are encouraging all households to be extra careful with their family heirlooms. With irreplaceable sentimental value it is important to get an up-to-date insurance valuation.

Anyone who has information in relation to any stolen jewellery or has information relating to any burglary should call 101, or call Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
