Jake Cody wins £133,800 in world poker tournament

Date published: 22 October 2014

Jake Cody, from Rochdale, one of the UK’s most successful poker players, finished fifth in the PokerStars European Poker Tour (EPT) winning £133,800.

Jake, a former EPT champion, learned to play poker at local home games with friends and by his late teens was winning big enough to be able to turn pro.

The tournament saw 675 players from 52 countries take part with Jake reaching the final table.

More than a quarter of the field of contestants came from the UK, but Jake was the only Briton to make the final. Both he and UKIPT Dublin Champion Kevin Killeen from Ireland had enthusiastic rails cheering them on throughout the final.

As a member of Team PokerStars pro, Jake has achieved a phenomenal set of results since arriving on the circuit in 2009 with live career earnings of more than $3,000,000 plus hundreds of thousands of dollars more online.

His rise to the top of the Poker circuit started in 2009 when he finished runner up in a $1,060-Max event at the Full Tilt Online Poker Series (FTOPS).

In January 2012, he officially made the big league when he won the EPT Deauville Main Event winning $1,213,194. This sent him on a run of major title wins that quickly earned him a reputation as one of the most skilled players the UK has ever nurtured.

Jake then added the World Poker Tour (WPT) London title to his résumé in August 2010 before his next big win online. He then went off to Las Vegas in June where he secured his first World Series of Poker Bracelet. As well as an $851,192 pay day, Jake had completed the elusive Triple Crown, having bagged an EPT, WPT and World Series title.

He rounded off 2011 with a near miss at the World Series of Poker Europe Main event finishing seventh and wining $200,379.

When PokerStars launched a live poker room in London in 2013, it was fitting that the winner of the first major event was Jake. He won the UKIPT Series 1 event for a cash total of $29,798.
