Family and friends of Ken Russ raise £10,000 for Christie Adult Brain Tumour Fund

Date published: 23 October 2014

Family and friends of Ken Russ, who was diagnosed with a brain tumour in May, have raised £10,000 for the Christie Adult Brain Tumour Fund.

Ken, 59, who lives in Littleborough, was diagnosed with a grade four glioblastoma brain tumour in May after collapsing at work and having a seizure.

After his diagnosis, Ken was sad to hear that little money raised for cancer research goes towards brain tumours and therefore wanted to do something to help victims in the future.

With the support of his friends and family, four events over four weeks were put in place to help raise the £10,000.

His daughters and step-daughter organised an awareness walk and a sponsored run around Hollingworth Lake which raised £900.

Ken’s neighbour had an afternoon tea party that raised £100 and an event held on Saturday 27 September went on to raise the additional £9,000.

The £9,000 was raised at a garden party which saw over 100 people attend. The event included an auction, a silent auction, a raffle, a cake and pie competition, makeup’s, and a tombola. Prizes for the raffle and auction were donated by friends, neighbours, local businesses and Selfridges.

Danielle Warcaba, Ken's step-daughter, said: “We were overwhelmed by how much we raised and can't thank everyone enough for their help, support and donations. Ken has had weeks of radiotherapy and is still undergoing chemotherapy at Christies.”
