Smallbridge Youth Club raise over £70 for Macmillan

Date published: 30 October 2014

Young people from Smallbridge Youth Club joined in with the world’s biggest coffee morning on Tuesday (28 October) and raised over £70 for Macmillan.

Organised by Rochdale Youth Service, the event was held at Smallbridge Library and saw the young people involved bake cakes and run the coffee morning.

The young people were joined by members of the local community who came out to show their support for the worthy cause and Chairman of the Pennines Township Committee Councillor Aftab Hussain also showed his support to the young people by attending the coffee morning.

He said: “I’ve always supported the work that Rochdale Youth Service and the young people of Smallbridge do in this ward. This is yet another great example of the how the young people from Smallbridge are engaged in positive learning through the support of our Youth Service. These young people have been empowered with the skills to plan and manage another event for a very worthy cause.”

Macmillan as an organisation was founded in 1911 by Douglas Macmillan. Macmillan Cancer Support has grown to become the largest cancer care and support charity in the UK.

Youth Worker Mohammed Zarafat said: “Arranging an event such as this is not easy for young people, however this group of young people have now delivered a series of events and have grown in confidence. They have put a lot of energy into supporting this cause and they are already looking to plan another event for Macmillan in the near future.”

Smallbridge Library Manager Nadeem Hussain added: “It’s great to see the Youth Service supporting young people from this ward in delivering such events. We work in partnership with the service to deliver such projects which will benefit the area and the wider society.”

Last year the youth club helped raise funds for Springhill Hospice. They went to see the hospice and read some of the stories left by the patients of the hospice which spoke of their individual courage against cancer and the importance of the support received by the patients and for the families involved.
